H.O.W. Stands in Solidarity with Detainees and Families

February 5, 2017 admin 0 Comments

Bienvenido, estamos contigo signOn a cold rainy Saturday in February, members of Humanists of Washington gathered at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington for a day of solidarity with individuals in federal immigration detention and their families.  Visitors trek long distances for limited visiting hours with loved ones housed at NWDC, and event attendees came prepared with coffee, snacks, meals, and toys for traveling children.  The event was organized by NWDC Resistence/Resistencia NWDC and the Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites, who welcomed speakers from a diverse variety of backgrounds and experiences.

According to Humanism and its Aspirations (Humanist Manifesto 3):

Humanists ground values in human welfare shaped by human circumstances, interests, and concerns and extended to the global ecosystem and beyond. We are committed to treating each person as having inherent worth and dignity, and to making informed choices in a context of freedom consonant with responsibility.

3 activists stand with a painted poster that says "Dignidad" in Spanish (English: "Dignity")It is this concern for human welfare that motivates us to stand in solidarity against the fundamentally inhumane and unfair conditions suffered by detainees.  We encourage interested members to contact us with ideas that interest you for activism, and to keep up with NWDC Resistence or CARW for future events.
