Humanist Celebrants for Life Events and Invocations

The Humanist Society provides training and certification for celebrants to be able to serve in roles traditionally reserved for religious clergy.  Celebrants carry the endorsement of The Humanist Society, an adjunct of the American Humanist Association, and are trained conduct humanist weddings, commitment ceremonies, memorials, baby namings, and other life cycle ceremonies.  Some humanists serve as ministers ordained by The Universal Life Church, an organization headquartered in Seattle with a highly expansive view of religious and spiritual practice. ULC clergy are legally entitled to officiate weddings in Washington State.  If you are a secular humanist with authority and/or training in performing officiant functions, please contact info@wahumanists.org so we can list you!

Since the 2014 SCOTUS decision dictating that invocations in the form of sectarian prayers at municipal and legislative meetings are allowed as long as no religious viewpoint discrimination occurs, Humanists legally cannot be excluded from such opportunities.  HoW can facilitate invocations in your county, city, town, or school district, if prayers are being offered ceremonially at the start of public meetings. Contact us if you’d like guidance on how to offer a secular humanistic invocation, or wish for a Humanist celebrant to come to you!
